English in Finland

How much English is really in Finland? Personally, I think that there is lot of English everywhere. We see it every day without even noticing. But if I think where in Finland I see or hear most English, I would say in Helsinki. It is a big city and there are a lot of people that don’t speak Finnish so there has to be English, so they understand. For example, some ads have English in them, and different sings. But if we are not talking about places then I would say that I see most English in social media, because there are many users that speak English. I also see English in TV, in radio, in ads, in sings or in the food packs.

We see much English everyday and in Finland lives many people that speak English. But will English affect the Finnish language? I think that English has already affected Finnish in some way. Because many young people use English words when talking and many people speak “Finglish”. But I don’t think that it is a bad thing at all, because many Finnish words are from English, for example “internet, selfie, brändi” and that is a good thing.

Now I will show one example of how English shows in Finnish packages.

Kuvassa on suomalaisen kosmetiikka brändin ”Lumenen” rasva. Sen takana lukee suomea ja englantia, koska Lumenen tuotteita myydään myös muualla, kuin suomessa, joten sen takana ei voi olla vain suomalaista tekstiä, jotta muutkin ymmärtävät.

2. Are there any situations in your everyday life where you prefer to speak English rather than your native language? Which situations and why?

Not exactly, but for example if I am talking to someone in the internet that does not undestand Finnish, then I prefer to speak English so that they can understand.

3. Would you manage abroad by speaking your native language only? Why / why not?

No I dont think so, because nobody speaks Finnish except the finnish people.

4. Do you ever think in English or any other foreign language? When?

No I only think in my native language.

Yes, I hear and see English every day in sosial media and for example I watch movies and series that are in English.

8. Do you see and hear other foreign languages in your daily life? Where?

No I mostly just hear and see my native language and English.

9. Do you use English to communicate with others whose native language is not English? Give examples of situations.

Yes for example in social media. English is easy to use with almost anyone, because most of the people understand it even a little.

10. Is your native language a big part of your identity? Explain why or why not.

Kinda I think, because Finnish is not common language and only Finnish people use it so it creates a sense of unity

11. What will be the role of English or other foreign languages in your future studies and working life? How will the role of foreign languages evolve in your life as you grow older?

I think that English will have quite a big role in my future, because my dream job is something related to the law. And ofcourse you need English elsewhere too, for example to communicate with people.

12. Name situations where only your native language would work for you so that you could express yourself appropriately.

For example if I am talking to a very old Finnish person, because some of them might not understand English, because they have never studiet English.

13. Should students study Spanish or Chinese rather than English? Explain why or why not.

I think that the best would be that the students can deside if they want to study them, because not everyone needs Spanish or Cinese in their life.
