How much English is really in Finland? Personally, I think that there is lot of English everywhere. We see it every day without even noticing. But if I think where in Finland I see or hear most English, I would say in Helsinki. It is a big city and there are a lot of people that don’t speak Finnish so there has to be English, so they understand. For example, some ads have English in them, and different sings. But if we are not talking about places then I would say that I see most English in social media, because there are many users that speak English. I also see English in TV, in radio, in ads, in sings or in the food packs.
We see much English everyday and in Finland lives many people that speak English. But will English affect the Finnish language? I think that English has already affected Finnish in some way. Because many young people use English words when talking and many people speak “Finglish”. But I don’t think that it is a bad thing at all, because many Finnish words are from English, for example “internet, selfie, brändi” and that is a good thing.
Now I will show one example of how English shows in Finnish packages.
Kuvassa on suomalaisen kosmetiikka brändin ”Lumenen” rasva. Sen takana lukee suomea ja englantia, koska Lumenen tuotteita myydään myös muualla, kuin suomessa, joten sen takana ei voi olla vain suomalaista tekstiä, jotta muutkin ymmärtävät.
